Old, new, borrowed and blue, no filler all killer, whatever you want to call it, it's a record fair. Dealers galore with private collections and owners of stores from all over Ontario and Quebec. Our shows are as good as the record shows from 20 years back and before....hey...if I can still find great wax at a record show(in Ottawa) in this day and age, you know there's great shit to be had!

Birdman Sound and Fuzz Pedal Promotions are pleased to present the legendary Damo Suzuki, former lead singer with the legendary German rock band CAN. The show will be Friday, March 23rd at the Dominion Tavern and tickets will be $20.00 in advance. the band whose name is a symbol will be Suzuki's "sound carriers" for the evening and the show will be recorded for a future release. The new TBWNIS vinyl LP entitled "Punks, Twats and Urban Cowboys" is also forthcoming. We are waiting at this moment for test pressings.

The lp represents itself as all original improvised compositions recorded live off the floor on 1st take and no overdubs. "PTUC" clocks in at 43 minutes and all pieces are presented in 2 side long suites. The group feels this forthcoming album to be their strongest to date. The LP will be a one time pressing of 100 vinyl only copies...

Tis the season…! I wish I could say that Birdman Sound’s 20th year was it’s finest hour, but I cannot! 22 weeks of road construction took the piss out of the situation in every respect. I want to thank those of you that walk the plank every single week in the quest for the very best that music has to offer and we can deliver! I look to your continued support to finish 2011 in some form of dignified fashion. Birdman is stocked to the hilt as usual and GIFT CERTIFICATES are always available and big at this time of the year. I hope you keep us in mind over the next few days avoiding the usual trappings and ridiculousness of big box stores and shopping malls. I would be remiss to say that shopping independent is going the way of the dinosaur and as trenches go ours is still just deep enough to continue the “good fight”.

A Few Favourites from 2011.......

Since I was a kid there has never been a year that a mind boggling amount of stellar albums have not been released. Every genre from around the globe, year in and year out and to date has never stopped. Anyone out there, (and I'm sure we all know someone)who constantly utters the line; "there hasn't been a good album released since______", is clearly a fucking moron who lives with their head firmly up their ass! By and large as I've said before, there is actually an overwhelming amount of mind blowing releases 24-7 and it's virtually impossible to keep up with any of it. My list to the left here is barely touching some of my stellar and repeated listening adventures of the past year. My "tops" lists are always based on records released in the year in question and usually also based on the repeat factor or "go to" categorization. It ain't scientific, it's always from the heart. In all honesty, the vast majority of my listening time this and every year for that matter (which I know is far more than most) has been spent listening to a large variety of music recorded and released prior to 1975. I am not stuck there by any stretch but I will say that although I like a lot of newer artists (look at what I play on the radio) I will say that my criteria for "great" new shit is that it must exhibit for me a reverence and understanding of it's own existence in history and part and parcel, it’s very presentation. Sound strange? Maybe, but always remember, that a person’s tastes in music is nothing but their very own business. There's lots to discover out there, old and new and it seems to never end.....bring it on I say!

Pentangle's Bert Jansch

Legendary and godlike British guitarist, Bert Jansch has passed our world at the age of 67.. Bert’s highly influential guitar playing received high praise and critical acclaim globally. A leader of the Brit folk revival of the 60’s both as a solo artist and with his phenomenal group Pentangle, he leaves behind a vast catalog of essential and exceptional music (20+ solo albums!!!). His last studio album “The Black Swan” from 2006, featured a who’s who ofyoung contemporaries who by any measure must have been awed to be in presence. I was lucky enough to have seen Bert Jansch play several times in the late 1980’s and I can tell you, it was magical.

Look, I'm just a dog also. Like my sister Clio, (remember John’s post back on August 8th on this blog?)I too am driven by the need to eat and just like her I'm always on the hunt (yes I know I look even sillier than my sister!). John (my master) made me a deal I couldn't refuse, so here's the thing, I'm here to equate the similarity between filling the void in one's gut and in one's soul cuz in all honesty things here in the last month have not improved one little bit so now I’m taking the shot. If this verbal exercise is successful, I get extra rations so pay attention, it only takes a moment.

As you know, when you're hungry you eat, you get filled up and feel better. So, If you need to nourish your soul, you buy music. Seems pretty simple to me, even though I'm just a dog! So if you think I'm kinda cute (mind you, like Clio, I was laid off back in May as well, due to the never ending road construction, so I'm not around much these days either), come check out Birdman Sound for the most eclectic record selection around with smokin' new arrivals every week(this never changes as John always says “there’s no rest for the wicked” !

TBWNIS will play Kaffe 1870, Wakefield Quebec, Saturday, September 17th. The group is joined by Hollow Bodies whom they shared the venue with back in the spring. This set will be the first without founding member Mark Alexander McIntyre (Bass), who has departed the region for what the rest of the group hopes to be "greener pastures". I would like to take this time to wish Mark the best in future endeavours and to say that we miss you as a friend and bandmate already! We (Mark included) collectively decided not to bring any "outsiders" into TBWNIS but instead look inward. Nathaniel and Bill who are both wicked bass players (and let's not even mention Mr. Reford)will be switching off on bass and some great new material; "The Circus Has Left Town" is already in full balls out "go mode".

Bill this week, presented us the preliminary mix on a session we recorded last month at Bearhill with the original 4-piece group which appeared on "Superficial Marks" and all I can say is "the fucker RAWKS"!! It's TBWNIS in punk-psych mode....! We will do something with this soon. Our new record which will be out in the fall, "Punks, Twats and Urban Cowboys", has been greeted with major enthusiasm by those that have heard the finished master. It features 6 new compositions recorded live in one take with nothing added to it whatsoever! It plays the same way as our 3rd oop record "Biker Smell", as in, 2 side long excursions into psychedelic skull-fuckery... it freaking kills.....the best yet!! There's even singing on the opening track by Hesham (Oud) who will be back from Kuwait in time for our show at the Kaffe. Okay...enough of this breast beating! Let's just say we all hope to see you soon...RAFR !

Look, I'm just a dog. Driven by the need to eat, I'm always on the hunt (yes I know I look silly). Tell ya' what, John (my master) made me a deal I couldn't refuse, so here's the thing, I'm here to equate the similarity between filling the void in one's gut and in one's soul. If this verbal exercise is successful, I get extra rations so pay attention, it only takes a moment.

As you know, when you're hungry you eat, you get filled up and feel better. So, If you need to nourish your soul, you buy music. Seems pretty simple to me, even though I'm just a dog! So if you think I'm kinda cute (mind you, due to construction I was laid off back in May, so I'm not around much these days), come check out Birdman Sound for the most eclectic record selection around with smokin' new arrivals every week!! Here’s the crux of the situation and I hope you can help. It has become so dead down here due to the road construction over the past month that financially Birdman Sound is slipping away to oblivion. Turning 20 years old this coming weekend, seems more a time for sorrow than celebration!

I know, as has been the case since 1991 that summertime causes a general slowdown and that everybody spends less time indoors with their music and more time outdoors. Going on vacation, going to the cottage and generally just hangin’ out in the backyard is what folks do this time of year. Sadly, and I am going to state the obvious here, Birdman Sound exists on a 12 month basis, being here to present some of the most eclectic music on the face of the planet and let me tell you that costs money. There is of course, a handful of diehard weekly regulars that keep the ball in motion but the reality is that a huge amount of music lovers appear to have fallen off the face of the planet!

I really just want to remind everyone that despite it being summer and coupled with the fact that I have NO FUCKING Road running by my front door, that Birdman Sound is here 6 days a week and packed to the gills with the most eclectic, critically analyzed and expertly handpicked music selection in the nation’s capitol. Every week there are new arrivals and this week is no exception…! From Mississippi Fred McDowell to Jackie-O Motherfucker and music from Java to Mali, Ethiopia to Iceland , we got it! Do you love Music ? Are you a critical thinker? Are you bored with the cultural pablum you get hand fed everyday ad nauseum by people who are about as deep as a puddle of dog piss ? Ask yourself these questions and consider supporting an entity that has always been driven to make you happy by fighting the aforementioned.

Not really, but, we got gigs comin' up and next weeks fucked for rehearsal, as Mark 'n' Bill are in Cape Breton. Some of us are gonna rehearse in the shop, tomorrow, June 25th, starting at 4 pm .....if yer in the hood, pop by and dig the vibes......We have a new album totally ready to go(different than the other album mentioned recently....so yes we actually have 2!). This album is called "Punx, Twats and Urban Cowboys". We're aiming for early August release and once again, 100 vinyl only LP's. It's so freakin' weird, heavy and intense (and although it sounds like us), it can still be considered alarmingly different by the same token......maybe tomorrow......we'll see you ?

TOTAL SMOKE...THE BAND WHOSE NAME IS A SYMBOL

We had a blast Saturday night at Birdman Sound, as part of the "Ottawa Explosion". The inaugural set by Matt Oxley's new outfit Human Being was just dandy, and despite being together for only a few weeks they turned in a raw, edgy and inspirational(short)set. We will play with them again, Yeah Hup! A solid crowd turned up with brews in tow and I must say I wish now I'd done more live shows in the store cuz it's a way wicked environment, it kinda seeths and spits the RAWK. TBWNIS was stripped to a six piece on this occassion as our oud player Hesham is at home in Kuwait for the summer and our violinist Jan, resides in the bush way outta town and had mucho car issues and could not make it. Both were missed, however as periodically has been known to happen, we have rehearsed the odd time as only a 3 piece and no matter who comes to the fucking parade we will always deliver! We twigged the set to "smoke" style and likely played a more "in yer face" show, more akin to what we did 3 or so years back. We had fun and the humans in attendance seemed to "get it". Me, Jason, Mark and Bill spent 4 hours yesterday, post show, putting together our next 2 LP's.....one working title is "Ladies Cheese Making Atellier" (don't ask...) Both these new albums kick ass and hopefully 1 will be out in time for the Birdman Sound 20th Anniversary on August 5th or 6th. We will be playing a show to commemorate that event and more on that later. Not sure coming up which Thursday yet, but we'll also freak the tourists out as we we're gonna play a free outdoor show at the National Gallery in the "Spider Pit" in late July or early August. Maybe you can pay close attention to this blog (as in watch for the date at the gallery once set) and come see a free show instead of getting sucked into the "Ottawa vortex of overated, way to expensive, every weekend's a fuckin' excuse for a festival depression", which seems now to be the sign of summer every year here now. By my estimation, this is far more ho hum than the never ending road construction that historically has defined Fat Cat city.

On an entirely different note, I just gotta say that The Starfuckers album
(just out on Holy Mountain)kicked my ass right up over my shoulder (and made my tired back feel better) !!! Geez Louise, how did I miss that mother 20 years ago...YOWZA!

I've decided (and...just moments ago, thanks to Last Exit) that this Friday, June 17th on Friday Morning Cartunes, to pay tribute of sorts, to that,(in the spirit of the theory, of "A" Jazz Festival). It's my personal "get ya in the mood" thing and I'll be playing a challenging blend of vinyl only releases from my own private collection. Birdman Sound....We need your support

We are 20 this year and face our largest and potentially most damaging scenario that could possibly wipe us out! Beginning next week, Bank Street goes under massive road construction.....! Based on past history, small business gets crushed during these events due to decreased traffic in their areas. Driving right up to the front door will be impossible here for some time as the road will be nada! Walking to the door however from various sides streets which we are surrounded by, will be easily doable(in fact healthier!). PLEASE continue supporting one of the best loved indie music stores around. New arrivals will happen as usual but they always need to be paid for, so do not "be afraid" of construction and a using a little more ingenuity to get to Birdman! 20 years to get here has been a rough ride at times, it would be the lamest thing ever to crash during this anniversary year....I hope for all of your continued support through this major ensuing debacle!

The Coolest Thing in This Boring City so Far in 2011

A funeral jazz band just paraded, with followers, by my store. Mike Essoudry's Potato Mashers have a new cd out....apparently.....the bass drum player was passing them out. For an "invited to participate for effect funeral band follower's crowd", they were pretty subdued. No gyrations, no choral activity, no real physical involvement what-so-ever, unless uneasy, "well-dressed-ment" passes itself off now as participation (in Ottawa this would not surprise me, as the "innovation" bar is always set to the lowest of the low (sorry for the pun)! Nonetheless it was the coolest I've actually witnessed in Ottawa so far this year... more engaging than anything passing itself off as such at Bluesfest 2011. Based on the their lineup this year, the words "cool" and "fest" = "HUH?" in my books...

Bill Orcutt to Play Ottawa

The former guitarist of Miami noise-rockers Harry Pussy, Bill Orcutt brings his tenacious and experimental/blues/folk instrumental guitar stylings to Ottawa on Monday, June 6th. A friend gave me a copy of his 2009 release "A New Way to Pay Old Debts" and I tell ya simply....."Holy shit" !! This dude plays a four string acoustic guitar with an over the edge rawness that blends the best John Fahey with Richard Bishop and confronts the grey matter with a noisy, jagged and bent approach to roots oriented music. What a great album. Go see Bill Orcutt at Raw Sugar on Somerset St. near Preston on Monday June 6th. Orcutt is in Ottawa only cuz he's playing the Suoni Festival in Montreal....be thankful !

WOW ! What a show this last Saturday. Recorded, filmed, pictured and a packed house!!! I'll let you all know when but we'll have a produced video up on VIMEO soon as our friends from Europe captured the whole shebang on tape.....can't wait to see the end result. Our new friend Heisham from Dubai kicked off our set on Oud and then we went off like a rocket!! Hope you had a blast! It's Cold Outside...Here's the Warmth

Spending on average 50 hours a week listening to music, I think I'll try regularly to share with you what I'm listening to. Of course some of it disseminates down to the radio show on Friday mornings so you can actually hear the stuff(see play lists throughout this blog), but in all honestly there's a major gap between the table in the shop and what I can squeeze into 3.5 hours of R&R radio.

As of late, here's the repeat factor for yours truly complete with some thoughts...

Unity - "Blow Thru Your Mind" LP.....whether original or pirate I care not cuz' the essential 70's spiritual jazz groove from New York circa 1974 is beautifully exercised on this slab to the max. Mixes real fine with Coltrane and Ornette. Byron Morris(Sax)leads this 7 piece oufit down a pretty righteous path. The vinyl is hellishly hard to find (cd on Soul Jazz UK) but well worth the hunt!

The Pharoahs - In The Basement LP...early 70's Chicago based funk/jazz blow out! These dudes made only 1 official LP and this live in the vaults assemblage was due to the interest by Luv & Haight issued in mid 90's...pretty sure this fella is oop but I finally got 1 for myself and a couple for the shop. Well worth the wait as the hard funk jazz onslaught is pretty epic! Pre-Earth Wind and Fire.

Follakzoid and Holy Drug Couple - are 2 different 12" EPs on the Sacred Bones label that both spin 2 side long excursions into the netherworld of psych to warm the lobe. Follakzoid are from the newish Chilean underground scene and do a pretty wicked NEU kinda trip. Holy Drug Couple are a bit on the dark and murky tip and play a heady eastern but west coast-ish psych style that mixes great between Buffalo Killers and MV & EE. I'm sure both records will be OOP lickety-split!

Anahita - Arcana En Cantos LP is a no brainer for me as I'm a big fan of both Espers and Fursaxa. Tara Burke(Fursaxa) and Helena Espvall-Santoleri (Espers) go for 4 solid lengthy excursions into the ethereal and experimental sides of psychedelia. Out there in every way, fans of Fursaxa will get this instantly and get prominent cello as an added bonus!

Handgjort were a Swedish outfit steeped in the mystical eastern influence and summer of love style and recorded this self-titled nugget in 1970. The album falls beautifully within the realm and kindred spirit of Algarnas Tradgard , Trad Gras Och Stenar and Kebnekase. Sitar soaked hippie folk-psych of the highest order and wickedly packaged. Superb!

The Brought Low - Third Record... Finally got this on wax and I dig it big! A retro 70's hard rock blues power trio with a warm fuzz style and actual songs that are memorable! A soulful swaggering style that found on the old mix tape; stuck between the Allman's and the MC5's "Shakin' Street", you'd never know they were newish...
