Listening Party @ Birdman Sound

5 of us got together last night to review a massive amount of recently recorded TBWNIS material. The focus of culling got sidetracked when Reford arrived with the Damo Suzuki performance from this past Friday evening. If we look happy in this photo, it's cuz the tape of the Damo show freakin' SMOKES....good lord ! It is a ferocious room recording which Reford captured beautifully! Bill took the master copy and will only adjust the levels here and there. Our aim is to release this on wax by June 21st. Our plan at the moment(as of last nite) is to play an instore
set on Saturday, April 21st, RECORD STORE day. We did not do a proper set to celebrate our latest LP which has been out for 4 weeks so why not? By the way there are only 30 or so copies of "PTUC" left so don't dither if you don't got, dig? We'll also have a new piece up on youtube this weekend.
3 1/2 minutes of blistering psych rock;"God II",captured by Al at the Dominion Tavern from last November's set opening for Slim Cessna's Auto Club.

Damo Suzuki & TBWNIS

We had a blast on Friday night at the Dominion playing behind Damo Suzuki in a sold out performance. It was an honor to say the least. Damo is the ultimate cosmic traveller and a super swell character. The collaboration came off so naturally it was like we had done this before. Right from the first moment of soundcheck, it became apparent that with nothing spoken regarding the music to be played that evening together, that the whole affair about to unfold could be magical.

Peanut Gallery Comments:

Damo Suzuki and TBWNIS.... I hope Suzuki remembers this gig - it must surely rank among his finest encounters with a network of unknown "sound carriers". I was simply blown away by the way the set took off. It was like a 747. I didn't expect Suzuki to sound like some grizzled bluesman either, and the effect was captivating. I hope the band is happy for and proud of what you pulled off...! A magnificent set, an incredible vibe, and a good meeting of minds.
See you soon,
Inderbir

Great gig, or at least it seemed that way from the audience! I hope you guys had a blast, too! Thanks for the terrific show and for making it happen!

Cheers, Michael

Other than suffering from a Suzuki hangover (which is a good thing)....I have to say John your band was amazing last night! You all should be very proud to have pulled off such an amazing show!.......Derek Bradshaw

As I said we had a blast and for literally 2 1/2 hours! We recorded the show and it was also captured on video. Hopefully we can put this together for an LP release by mid summer. Eric will have something on VIMEO soon so I'll keep ya'll posted on these matters.

Many thanks to the Dominion Tavern (Al and the staff), Mary Mackinnon, Eric Larock, Mike Caffery,S.O.A.P.,Dave Aardvark, Ben Armstrong and the great crowd that supported and attended this event. The photo above was taken by Bijon Roy.

Short Notice.......JOZEF VAN WISSEM ...ShowThis Thursday, March 22nd

JOZEF VAN WISSEM: THE LIBERATION OF THE LUTE
A Deep Listening Experience

Thursday, March 22, 2012
The Mercury Lounge
56 Byward Market Square
8PM / $10

"Fresh off a fantastic new album with Jim Jarmusch, composer and
lutenist Jozef van Wissem continues his "Liberation of the Lute”.
Simultaneously austere and lush, Van Wissem's music draws inspiration
from the repeating patterns of minimalism, provoking for listener and
performer alike a transcendental state — meditative, but exciting,
seamlessly bridging the language of 17th century music with that of
the 21st, without compromising the timbre and resonance of
traditional lute playing techniques.

Over the last two decades, Van Wissem has variously used cut-and-
paste tactics, field recordings, free improvisation, and created
palindromic compositions by playing pieces forwards and then
backwards. The resulting sound world is at once meditative and
surprising, new and arcane. Mirror image melodies are formed that
step up and then back down seemingly without end, thus eschewing
traditional linear progression and climax, instead maintaining a
constant level of intensity. This music brings the listener into a
state of concentrated listening."

Comments From The Peanut Gallery....

You release an album because as an artist you want to share your love with other people. Sometimes the love is returned...here's what some folks have to say about "the band whose name is a symbol"...

“Punks, Twats & Urban Cowbys” Feb. 2012

***"your new LP is outstanding! played it 3 times already" Matthew (Ottawa)

***What was that track you played just now? Ha! TBWNIAS. no wonder I liked it….Mary (Ottawa)

“TBWNIS Vs. The Purveyors Of Conspicuous Authenticity” Apr. 2011

***“Hey John, i picked up the LPs from the post office today. Four sides digested....wow! I wish I could formulate some words to describe my impression, but my frontal lobe no longer functions properly. I really hope I can catch a live show sometime. Just incredible, especially Versus The Purveyors of Conspicuous Authenticity” Thanks a lot! Cheers….Jason (Port Elgin, ON.)

***Hi John,
The new record is very good. Maybe more psychedelic and droney.
We really like it. Is there any new release?
Michael-Antonios (Greece)

Laurent (Montreal)

**John,
Holw cow. The TBWNIS LP is k-i-l-l-e-r. If we hadn't talked about Krautrock and Sky Saxon this morning, then you'd never have mentioned it! I'm glad you ceased being modest for that instant. This is a serious album, and I dig it. I can see how you'll work in the oud. I look forward to hearing more about the krautrock influences; for now, I just hear Alice Coltane, and assorted heavyness, but that's me! Yours,Inderbir (from Carleton Architecture School, Ottawa)

Rudy Can't Fail....

I've known Bob Snyder for god knows how long, likely since I arrived in Ottawa at some point in the mid 80's. Some know him by "Little Bob",his punk rock "handle" and it was though our mutual love for punk rock music "back in the day" that we met. Bob moved west for a period, but upon returning, we rekindled our friendship, again through a mutual love for the RAWK(Bob was a Resin Scraper fan of course!). Another common bond we shared was an uncompromising love for dogs and Rudy was Bob's pride and joy. Perhaps if you've been to Birdman Sound over the past umpteen years you know there might have been dogs encountered. Rudy made his appearances often on Saturdays with Bob(in tow) usually after a long trek from Hull where the 2 lived(and often sharing French fries). Our old guy, Connor(Hound extraordinaire) was a fast friend of Rudy's as well as their other mutual bud's occasionally in the shop; Rommel(Rottweiler) and Winston(Pug). When we got our pack trio a decade ago these 3 (Liam, Fiesty and Clio),always enjoyed Rudy’s company(especially the girls!). Rudy was often known to Birdman patrons to be wandering through a crowd, always so gentle and friendly, wagging his tail. Many fond memories are also recalled regarding “farm visits” as all aforementioned critters spent time there.

I knew there was something weird yesterday seeing Bob in a car(he currently doesn’t have one)outside Birdman(and the vet clinic)at 10 AM on a Wednesday. Honestly I felt sick at heart. At 11:30 AM or so, at 13 years of age, Bob said farewell to his best friend Rudy.

Rudy now joins Connor and Rommel(both a few years back) and Winston, just last summer, and are all now hopefully in a place, maybe together, running about on that endless green grass plain where a neverending supply of sunshine, bones, cool water and even French fries are in abundance. I had a nip of Scotch last night Bob and thought of Rudy. Carol and I are saddened by your loss and our thoughts are with you. As I post this now, I'll close the shop for a moment and regain my composure (for the 2nd day in a row). Big guys are not supposed to cry… see ya’ later Rudy, I will never forget you.
